Dynamic Loft

Post by cdrob22 » Tue Feb 03, 2009 11:19 pm

Keep up the great work

My question surrounds the "Dynamic Loft" parameter. I assume this is the loft of the club plus the loft added by the foreword bending of the golf shaft. How does one determine how much loft a particular shaft adds to the dynamic loft? Is the tip stiffness as determined by its bend profile i.e. xxx-yyy cpms = plus 1 degree, aaa-bbb cps = plus 2 degrees ect? Do you use the codes used by Golfworks and Golfsmith what classify a shaft as high, mid, or low launch? If so than how many degrees do we add for a high, mid, or low launch shaft. Or do we just guess(this is what i do)?

Thanks for the help.

Chris,
I have a current project (in conjunction with The Golf Coast) to try to determine the relationship between bend profile and trajectory. We do not have definitive results at the moment. Obviously, tip stiffness factors in, but we don't have enough to say anything quantitatively yet. So you will have to guess.

There are a few other things that figure into dynamic loft besides the rated loft and the shaft bend:
  • The actual loft at the point of impact. This can differ from the rated loft because (a) face roll makes it dependent on how high on the face you hit the ball, and (b) different manufacturers use different measurements to rate the loft.
  • Cupping or bowing the wrist coming into impact. Depending on the details of the swing, this may show up as angle of attack (rarely) or dynamic loft (usually).
Hope this helps a little. I know it's not all that you were hoping for.
